Sometimes it drops by 1 other times by up to 5 even though the voltage is very smooth and only dropping slowly?

Where the big jumps are there is no movement in the value for a while then takes a big jump - the voltage is still dropping its just like the ADC value gets "stuck" and doesn't want to change.

It may be a result of DEBUG or something similar. If the voltage is dropping regularly but you are not sampling regularly you will note a disparity. It is in the nature of the PICAXE that different code paths, or the same code paths with different variable values, can give uneven sampling rates unless that is explicitly ensured.

We'd really need to see the circuit diagram, source code and understand any feedback loops or other output which affects the system if there are any to analyse the problem further.

Thanks Manuka....this changed my mental image considerably! I envisioned remote solar projects being assaulted by cars with stuck accelerators!
