Is there a definative list of the file types (extensions) that can be posted as attachments ?

I think it's more important to know what file formats can be read by the majority of forum members.

I've overlooked posts that include drawings in file formats for various CAD packages that I don't have on my machine and don't wish to take the time and effort (and memory space) to load. Stick to the standard ones for maximum availability to forum members, even if that requires some time to do the conversions.

If you are using Windows Vista or 7 a vey useful, but often overlooked, tool is the 'SnippingTool' that will capture any screen image as a graphic image (jpg, png etc). It gives similar functions as Grab on a Mac.
The price is right (free and it is already preinstalled as part of Windows) and allows any pcb/schematic to be instantly grabbed and posted as an attachment.

Of course.

In the past I have tried to post .bas, .zip. and .doc files which should be readable by the majority. The number of forum members who cannot read these formats must be very few indeed, if any.

So why did I have to rename them to .pdf ?

So the list, as an example says ZIP can be attached, yet they cannot ?
Was it too large? There is a filesize limit on all types.

Edit - Actually it may have been that only moderators could use zip before - try now.

I have a related question. When I view threads that have attached .bas files, the browser shows the "red X" icon.

Why is that??

Ron, some security pgms will block the downloading of executable files, exe, com, bat, bas, etc, in the belief that they may be viruses.

Your security software may need to be modified so you can see the .bas files.

I can see and download the files - it's the red X icon I question. That usually means the HTML IMG tag reference is invalid - the bas.gif file is not found.

In this case the HTML code is
<IMG class=inlineimg title="File Type: bas" alt="File Type: bas" src="images/attach/bas.gif">
Answered my own question ;)

I can now post a .ZIP file, thanks.

I dont now get an invalid format when posting a .DOC and a .BAS file.

Although the file size limit is so small (19.5kB) that you cant actually post an empty .DOC file as the size of this exceeds what can be posted..

Same thing with the .BAS file, the limit is 19.5kB. I would have thought that the file size limit here ought to allow for the posting of .BAS files for the larger programs. The size limit set allows the posting of a file which would only be about 60% of what will fit in a 20X2, although if you take out all the comments (!!) you could post longer programs.
