Upgrading the picaxe axe210 to take a xbee pro

Hi, I wonder if the voltage regulator on the axe210 board can power the xbee pro board? I looked at the specifications and seems that I need to upgrade the regulator. I have tried to use a ld1117av33 regulator but I can't connect to the xbee module at all. I have tried the pic and I can talk to that no problems so I know the cable and software is ok. I have even put the xbee pro into another board and I can talk to that ok so I know is something to do with the axe210 board.

I have checked the voltages and I am getting around 3.25V to the sipex chip and the xbee and the led's on the axe210 board are lighting and flashing fine.

I have attached the datasheet for the voltage regulator.

Any suggestions or help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
