Unsuccessful install

I just downloaded the programming editor to a Compac Laptop with Windows XP. It had problems with installing some fonts and dll's, ocx's etc. It could not register them. It questioned whether I had rights to install software. I have installed software many times before and never had to explicitly log in as administrator. In fact I don't even know the password. Anyway the install failed so I still don't have the programming editor on the laptop. Any suggestions?

This machine has been in storage for awhile. Could it be that I don't have all the latest system updates?

If you can install other software then you should be ok. The issue could also be caused by anti-virus type software or other non-standard security settings (e.g. setting the windows folder to read-only) that prevent adding files to the windows/system32 folder or preventing writes to the registry.
