Source of RF Tx/Rx chips in Australia

Howdy,

I'm a new guy to this forum and just starting down the picaxe road. I have a background in electronics (F-111 terrain following radar) but not much history with micro controllers.

My main interest is motor control using RF devices.

I'm a transplanted Texan living in Southeast Queensland, OBTW where is the sun?

Can any Australian based forum member(s) recommend a good Australian source of RF Rx/Tx chips?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! I'm a former F-111 man myself! I focused more on the Pave Tack pod rather than the TFR, but it's good to see a fellow Aardvark soul!

For the record, I think a Picaxe 20x2 running at 64Mhz probably has more computing power than the old Pave Tack computer!

The sun is over here as usual - 40C today. Just about to hop in the pool.

Are all good suppliers for Robotics stuff

bpowell, Have you ever ran into a TI tech rep by the name of Mike Marks? He was working the pave tack pod at RAF Lakenheath in the mid-late 1980's. Yep, it has been awhile ago!!

Nope, doesn't sound familiar; however, I didn't teal with the TI reps much...I was USAF. I didn't think we sold the F-111's until the mid 90's...what was Pave Tack mounted on over there in the 80's? F-4's?

I learned electronics in the USAF, but didn't really get into the tinkering spirit until well after I was out...and when I discovered the Picaxe...Picaxe enables me to do just about anything I can think of...so far, the imagination has been the limit!

(OT)Haha - Panavia Tornado TFR is in my CV somewhere. It was the next Big Thing(tm) then, but now I see that they're not going to be around much more...

bpowell - the F-111F at RAF Lakenheath were operated by the USAF and had Pavetack - would enjoy chatting more about the F-111, but don't want to bore the other forum members. Feel free to contact me at twebbcon@gil.com.au

MartinM57 - Texas Instruments (TI) fitted some of the Tornados with TFR with a hydraulic scan drive - TI never did that again!!!

Personally i like a little off topic as it makes us all human and gives an insight to others lives.
It is not always well received as excepted on this forum, but for one i dont have a problem with it.

Now for what you guys are talking about im still trying to put it all in place, and if you cut out now i am left wondering???

Think its great a couple of old ex personell are able to find a common link to the past with one and the other.

Hi, myself and younger bro both served at the RAAF base in south Qld. in the late seventies early eighties, broke my old heart when they retired the pigs Aka F-111 a few weeks back.
Happy picaxing and that you enjoy this forum as much as I have

Welcome to the PICAXE forum.

It depends upon what your specs are.

Do you want just chips or actual modules?
What frequency 433 MHz, 2.4 GHz or other ?

Jaycar sell some basic ASK type 433 MHz TX and RX modules
http://www.jaycar.com.au/

Microzed as the main Australian PICAXE seller/agents also sell HOPERF type ,odules
http://www.microzed.com.au/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=42&zenid=t9vt1lp1lnf7ho9eu3jljlc4d2
I'm open to suggestions regarding chips/modules and frequency. I'm looking at a range of about 10M maximum, ease of implementation and cost.

The function would be in remote motor control (i.e. opening gates). This is my first project. My thoughts are to get everything working first with a manual push button approach, then add the RF link.

I welcome any and all recommendations!

I'll second the link to microzed.

I wouldn't use the ones from Jaycar. Yes, they work, but they are more tricky to work with and only when you put a CRO on the receiver do you see why, eg changes to the waveform from your hand or your body being near the antenna.

There are many variants on the ones from microzed but basically they all have an onboard micro which does the filtering. There have been many discussions over the years as new versions of these modules come out, but essentially they all work very reliably. You can get a serial link working as a wired link then drop in the radio modules as a replacement.
