Replacing (PS/2) mouse with joy stick(microswitch)

Hi all,
I've got myself a little task to replace my PC mouse with an arcade style joystick (ie: 4x momentary-on micro switches) & seperate button.
I've had a quick browse on the 'net, and it appears the basics of the PS/2 mouse are relatively straight forward... 0 & +5v for logic 0 & 1, synchronous bi-directional serial signals with 1x data line, & 1x clock line.
each time the mouse moves, it transmits to the PC 3x consecutive data packets, being a start bit, an 8-bit word, a parity & a stop bit, sinc'ed to the clock pulse of about 100 microseconds... sounds a piece of cake to emulate, if you say it quick!
then I thought chances are someone has done something similar before, so before I spend the next couple of weeks evenings trying to actually make it work, I thought I'd just ask first:)
I tried a search of the earlier forums, but couldn't spot one that quite fitted my requirement.

Cheers, Bryan.
