Ummmmm - sort of embarassing!

Anyone know what the "magic green wire" they use to fix broken or MISSING pcb traces is called and where to get it? Is it just wirewrap wire?

Trying to rescue a batch of drink coasters...........DOH!

Cheers Guys

Thanks for link Westy - they are little bit cheaper than Farnell who wanted $52!

P.S.
When the enamel melts, a little toxic gas is released, so like with any soldering activity, good ventilation is recommended.

WireWrapping?..

Hi Folks..
Wire wraping, Kynar wire is wire wraping wire in the sence that the ends are striped, then using a special tool wrapped around the sqaure pins of pin headers or even IC pins, remove the pin from the socket and wrap direct. Great for last minute mods or corrections, never heard of it being soldered!!
The square pin edges almost cut into the wire, giving a very tight and good contact. :)

Wire wrapping as per Vero uses a pen to wrap the very fine wire around IC or component pins, again the very fine coating melts when soldered but this needs about 300C temp. Yes Bitsbox sell Kynar and lots of other bargain stiuff... See pics of vero wrap and Kynar, etc..
Hope it helps.
Mel.

My home made wiring pen, using the wire from my post #9 above:

Some early results:

Note. The wire I'm using is AWG 30 (0.254mm).

The square pin actually does cut into the wire in proper wirewrapping: the pin and wire actually weld.

The wire wrapping tool must match the wire and size of the square pin. Just wrapping the wire around a square or round pin with pliers will not create a good joint. In time, corrosion will set in, compromising the joint.

Peter (in a past life I was a wrapper of many 10s of thousands of wires:cool:)

Wire Wrapping.

Hi.
Boriz, like the pen good job. The problem with the Vero pen is price about £12 and it's only plastic, With my first pen I left it and the wire on a joint when I soldered it, it melted a very neat grove in the tip, never quite the same after that.

Pete, Yes I agree with what you say, proper wire wrqpping really does make a good joint/connection, but it has to be done right, no good just twisting it round the pin. In my old Z80 days I too was a enthusiastic!! wrapper, just don't have any samples to show..

hahaha :D very good Boriz, subtle & perfect delivery 9.9 pts

edit: LIke the pen too, did that little spool come with the kynar already loaded?

Nope. Got the wire off ebay (see post #9 above), but mine is AWG 30. The spool is from a local shop, a small bobbin intended for a sewing machine. Made a little motorised winder to put wire on the bobbin. All very slap dash and low tech. Note, I couldn’t source a suitable hollow tube as a ‘nib’, so I improvised a tiny hoop/eye using a paperclip. Works just fine.

It's not Kaynar wire (I think). It's just sold as solderable magnet wire. Just like normal enamelled copper wire, but the enamel burns off at 155c. Well below soldering temperatures.

Wirewrapping..

Hi All,
It looks like both vero wrapping wire and Kynar are 30 SWG, but the coating on the Vero stuff is a lot thinner! and seems to just vaporize when soldered at the right temp. Kynar just seems to melt!! I use it like the Vero but always strip the ends and solder as usual. Perhaps next time I'll give it a try, just wrap it and solder.... Smelly, gooooy...

And here's a picture of my tool!:D

Mel.

Whenever I can understand the lyrics I always get the impression that (w)rappers tools are a bit overused... ;)

PS. Nice colour co-ordination on that Z80 board. The blue and pink go together very nicely.

EEK. Far too tidy. I’d go mad building that. And what’s BeanieBots SEX 2 ??? Some kind of early version of a porn site, on ROM?

Wire wrqpping...

Hi BB,
Very neat board, but we were warned that too tidy can give problems with cross-talk as the wires only have a few tho! of insulation between them. And with 8 data lines, 16 address lines, Address decoding/enable and fast (4Mhz) clocks... signals. But did'ent seem to do any harm and I must admit to liking a neat layout.

If you want to see mine look here...http://www.btinternet.com/~MELVYNSAUNDERS/electronics.html There's also a bit about Pic's and PicAxe on there.. more to come!

Mel.

PS. Have we finished talking about tools and SECS2??
