just wondered if anyone knew how to use infrared in a circuit with 08Ms and where to buy the components from

Have a look at Manual 2 page 79, for the components and circuits.

In Britain, it's easier to buy from Rev-Ed.

i think i've found one, would the 55-0905 as a receiver, and the 58-0320 from <a href="www.rapidonline.co.uk">www.rapidonline.co.uk</a> do for use on an 08M

That IR receiver looks like it should work. Note that you will need remote control that can send Sony TV codes to interwork with the PICAXE firmware.

From my experience, the IR functionality works reliably and, importantly, is very simple to implement.

Then download and read the Rudolf data sheet.
