Hi Hippy, your article above says that the circuit has never been tested, but have you ever made it work with an LS164 and 44780.
How important is the diode type IN914?

In this case "never tested" does mean just that. I believe someone did get something working but had to change a few things around; I think 'E' had to be controlled separately, making for a three wire LCD interface.
