solenoid driver

i have brought the picaxe microcontroller book by David Lincon and for my solenoid it tells me to add a NPN Transistor but i do not know what value or type so can some one help me. Thanks

That would depend on your solenoid.
What current does it draw and what voltage will you drive it from?

Or, you could just use the little, tiny, latching relays mentioned in an earlier post to run the solenoid at up to 2A. ;-) A nice, mechanical, solution. None of those newfangled transistor things needed. %->
