I have a velleman k8048 pic programing board which has an DE9 RS232C socket. I no longer have the velleman software nor any computer with RS232C circuits.

Can I buy a AXE029 serial adapter ( I already have an AXE027 USB--3.5mm lead) and link through to the signal pins on the DB9? For that matter do I need a AXE029 at all if I can figure out which side of the 3.5mm jack is txd / rxd ? and could I then just link through (with pullups) to the in circuit serial programming ICSP lines VPP GND DATA ? so just throw away the RS232 level conditioning?

has anybody been down this path before ?

I accept that if I want to use [MAC]AXEPAD I'll need to buy picaxe parts .
