picaxe and RS485

Most likely you'll need an IC to convert signals from Picaxe to RS485. Not very expensive and lots of fun.

You are really only changing the physical layer of this standard by using an RS-485 driver chip. The sertxd etc commands will work just fine with these chips.

I've controlled a camera using RS485, using a MAX485 chip. Really easy to use. What was slightly more complex in my situation was the protocol the camera wanted (Pelco D protocol) - but this achievable using an 08M and about 20 lines of code.
