While searching eBay for a DMD, I came across this display module.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BARCREST-MPU4-FRUIT-MACHINE-ALPHA-NUMERIC-DISPLAY-UNIT-FULL-WORKING-/200833069523?_trksid=p4340.m1850&_trkparms=aid=222002&algo=SIC.FIT&ao=1&asc=11&meid=2787245502367192286&pid=100011&prg=1005&rk=3&sd=200817471720&

The datasheet does not describe the interface in detail, but's not going to be difficult to work it out.
It's only three wires, Reset, Data, and Clock.

It looks nice piece of kit, if I wasn't so busy I'd get one.

The datasheet for the MPU4 system which I Googled and downloaded.

Unfortunately it's a 1.6Mb .doc file, and the forum attachments options won't let me post it, says it's too big.

Would a link have hurt?
Sorry, I didn't make a note of where I found the file, Scribd maybe. ( www.scribd.com )

I was going to post it to my ftp space and link to there, but then I saw you had found another link anyway !.

The spare part market of fruit machines looks to be a good source for cheap hardware.
For example, I saw a reel unit with 4 chunky steppers, drive electronics, and opto-switches, all for £10.

Cheers,
