LCD I2C display with 14M2

I'm trying to use 2004 (20x4) LCD display with fitted I2C interface on PICAXE 14M2. I know the display works and the address is correct as it works with Arduino Uno, ($27 for Arduino so using $4E for PICAXE). The display show some response to commands but just can't get it to display text on the screen.
Anyone get any ideas?

I have/am working with this LCD and I can tell you the code hippy has offered is bang on. I did find the command value to select the start point of each line was not correct for my particular display, but otherwise got me going.

NOTE: Be sure you have the contrast adjusted suitably. A one of the sample displays I purchased with a fitted I2C interface was maladjusted and initially appeared to not function. With a slight tweak of the contrast pot revealed that it was operating just fine.

Mort.
