The online version http://www.picaxe.com/BASIC-Commands/Advanced-IO-Interfacing/hi2csetup/ , Example 1 uses hi2csetup followed by writei2c. Can the 2 types of i2c work together?

Thanks for spotting that one and we have replaced "writei2c" with "hi2cout".
The two commands are synonymous so either can be used, as is the case for "readi2c" and "hi2cin". The old "i2cslave" commands maps to the equivalent "hi2csetup i2cmaster" command.
Whichever is preferred can be used but it's best to stick to new or old and not mix them, and we would recommend using the "hi2c" versions.
