hardware serial port and 'software' serin in the same program?

Should I have any problems using the hardware serial port with the hsersetup comm and the normal 'software' serin in the same program? i.e Does activating the hardware serial port preclude the use of the 'normal' serin?

Is the timeout function on the serin command affected by the activation of the hardware serial port?

I ask as I'm experiencing some problems with these coms and am trying to narrow down the possible causes.

I have run some tests and it appears that the hardware serial input and the software serial input with time out can run simultaneously in the same program without clashing.
