How are you using the mercuty tilt switch in the charging circuit? You only charge the toy when is sitting in a specific way?
 
Yes. It can only charge when turned upside down at a high enough angle for the mercury tilt switch to be turned off. It was the only way I could think of that did not involve weird transistor circuits or swiches.
 
I didn’t want to add a physical on/off switch to cut off the battery during charging — mainly because I didn’t want too many bits sticking out of the body. I also wasn’t sure if a transistor would isolate the circuit well enough for the charging module to handle the lithium battery safely. Those things can be pretty dangerous if not charged properly.

The design brief didn’t say the toy had to be at a certain angle — it just said everything should be hidden neatly inside. Using tilt to turn it off was just something I decided to do.
