Probably a Lithium battery of some type.

I wonder if it has the essential protection circuit fitted...........

The spec says it is 'explosion proof', so maybe the designer doesn't think it needs a protection circuit

I have a 9000 mah version of this by VAAS that I use to extend the life of my Android tablet. It has two USB outlets, one rated at 1A the other rated at 2A. The power from the pack is cleaner than the power from the wall wart charger for the tablet - touching the screen with the wall wart attached gets lots of wierd responses. No problem with the VAAS pack. I also got a a 5000mah pack for my wife's Android tablet - life is about half the VAAS pack (as expected) but good enough to finish the book you're reading.
The tablets are Kocaso, 10.1", Android 4.0, an M1061 and an M1062, purchased for $129US (newegg) and $139US (one of the daily sales vendors).
Hers spends 90% of it's life as a reader for Kindle books. Mine is 50% reader, 25% each email and web..
