My 40+ son has asked for an electronics kit that he plugs things into and it "just works" any suggestions?

I would suggest the AXE300 (Picaxe Grove board).
That's a good suggestion -

It's a shame the Grove Connectors don't have 0.1" pitch and their pins are too small for Dupont female socketed wires to grip on to.

The 'top of the class' development board for the PICAXE user is the AXE091, which we use for our own internal projects, testing and PICAXE development. If I didn't have one I'd be over the moon to receive that as a present -

There is also the AXE055 T4 Trainer but that isn't so easy to expand -

I guess part of the decision will come down to whether he has any electronics experience or not, whether he's more interested in the hardware or interfacing side of things or the programming.

I still swear by the AXE092 "Schools Experimenter" kit but I see you can only buy is as a bare board or as five complete board kits. With 3 x LEDs, piezo sounder, LDR, input switch and breakout strip all on-board, the AXE092 kit was a great self-contained go-anywhere system which I still use from time-to-time.

As an aside, the AXE092 got me started with PICAXEs, when I was also in my 40s. I had previously worked with microprocessor systems in the 1970s and 80s and the all-in-one PICAXE microcontroller made so much easier.
