ADNS-2610 optical mouse as position sensor

Very cool. Thanks for that.
I have often thought about using a hacked optical mouse as a position tracking system for a little wandering robot. One of these devices, plus a solid state compass module or gyro should be able to stay reasonably accurate much longer than wheel encoders. Add a fixed IR ‘beacon’ (maybe a recharging station) that can occasionally correct any drift, and you should have a pretty good navigation/mapping system.
