Forum won't remember me . . .

I don't see a forum location to talk about forum login issues, so I'm posting this in the main forum.

My problem is, when I ask the forum to remember me so that I don't have to log in each time, it doesn't.

I'm using Firefox, cookies are turned on for picaxeforum.co.uk. javascript also turned on for this website.

Can anyone tell me what settings I'm forgetting to enable automatic log-in when I come back here?

Yes, I can't get auto to work either if I logged out.
So, I logged in, and never logged out. Just close Explorer when finished.
I'm sure you all have this Forum in your favourites, so click it and you're in.
No need to log in.

IF you never delete your cookies. Which is bad security practice IMHO.

There is a confusion of terms here. This website forum software package is no different to most websites, in that it uses cookies to remember you're logged in.

So if you log in and select the 'remember me' option a cookie will be written - next time you visit the site you will be automatically logged in (as long as the cookie has been sucessfully written and has not yet expired - both these things can be adjusted by third party security packages and/or the browser security settings itself).

However when you click 'log-out' the cookie is completely deleted. Imagine you were in a cybercafe - you wouldn't want the next user of the computer to visit the forum and automatically be logged in as you - so for security reaons when you 'log out' the the cookie is completely deleted. Hence next time you visit you will need to log back in.

So if you want to stay logged in don't ever click the 'log out' link, just close your browser.

I delete my cookies now and then. Never had a problem... famous last words.
I think I can manage to remember my password once a month, so I'm really not worried.
I'll still do what I do and as the cookie security is concerned that applies to everyone regardless of whether you log out from this particular Forum or not.

P.S.
That's a good point Technical re: cafes or any stranger PC.

One of the many powerful features of Firefox is that you can choose how your cookies are handled -- always delete, always keep, always keep until browser session ends, or "ask me each time."

I use the "ask me" so that I can choose which cookies I keep and which I lose. My problem which started this thread turned out that I had selected "keep" for one forum cookie, and selected "keep until browse session ends" for another. When I corrected that mistake, all was well.

I've just had to re-install Win XP and I deleted everything off disk before doing so, cookies and all. Despite having to login on the first access to the site, the forum itself seems to have remembered which threads I've read and which I haven't ... now that is impressive, so I'll clock that up as a gold star for the new forum.

I'm pretty sure that's server-side (threads/posts you read are logged under your account) - I like that feature a lot too :D

I'm not entirely sure why people still think you have to log-out of a website even on their own, personal computer :S

Note: "Remember me" will only work if you don't log out - it will act as if you have been logged in the entire time (even when you close your browser and shut-down your computer).

Hope that helps, somehow. :p
