Help, Picaxe Editor will not open

Hi,
New here so please be gentle.

I have contacted "support" with nothing over two weeks. This is a copy of my last email.

Can someone here help me, as I am pulling my hair out.

Further to my email requesting help running Picaxe Editor 6, sent 5 days ago, I have carried out the following:
1.Removed the copy of PE6 from my laptop.
2.Checked that the laptop is fully up to date with MS updates.
3.Restarted the laptop.
4.Reloaded PE6 from your website.
5.Installed the drivers for the download cable.
6.Fitted the download cable to the USB socket and allowed the laptop to install the new hardware.
7.Started PE6 by double clicking the exe file.
As soon as the small PE6 window appears it stops and goes to a checking for solution window.
Please can you advise what to do to get PE6 running.
By the way I was brought a Picaxe starter pack for Xmas and there was no disk in the pack, hence I am trying to load PE6 from your website.

Thanks for any help.

Best regards Rick

Please accept our apologies for the delay in responding. Your last email was received after our offices had closed last Friday so is in the queue to be answered when staff return to work. I can find no record of a previous email which is probably why that wasn't answered.

I am not sure what is causing the issue you are having which appears to be a "System.ExecutionEngineException" error. That "System" prefix would suggest to me it is something to do with the Windows configuration you have, and the error seems to be thrown from within Microsoft's "Net.Framework". If you clicked "Send Error Report" our technical staff should have received a copy of that error report and from it will hopefully be able to identify why that is occurring.

Unfortunately it is not an error I recall seeing before or being reported so there does not seem any easy answer to give to overcome whatever the issue or cause is. It might be worth checking what Dot-Net Frameworks you have installed.

If you have access to another PC, have a friend, colleague or acquaintance willing to help out, it might be worth trying to temporarily install PE6 on that to see if it fares any better. You would not need to install the AXE027 drivers just to test if PE6 runs.

Hippy,
Thanks for the fast reply.
I did send an error report the first time I tried to open PE6. However I can send another tomorrow if required.
I will also check and advise the .net info tomorrow.
And try another laptop.

Best regards Rick

Hippy,

I am sure that the problem is caused by something on my laptop, so I have not tried to load PE6 onto another laptop.

My issue of DOT-Net is Microsoft.NET Framework 4.7.2 and it was updated 09/01/2019

What I have done is to remove PE6 from my laptop and install PE5, as a test, and it opens. So in my book there is something wrong/missing on my laptop which stops PE6 from opening. Is this of any help?

Best regards Rick

Hippy,

I have good news for you (and me).
With no other information, I decided to re-load the Windows 7 OS on my laptop, even though there was no problem with any other software.
With the laptop re-loaded and up to date with Windows Updates I loaded PE6 from your website and it now runs with no apparent problems.
If you find out what the problem was I would like to know.

Best regards Rick

Excellent news and many thanks for letting us know.

I don't think we'll ever entirely know why it did not work. It seems it should have worked, but didn't, and the re-load and update fixed whatever it was.

It sounds to me like it's one of those cases where things got out of kilter, what was supposed to happen didn't, and it can be very difficult trying to discover exactly what was out of kilter.

The good news is that, now it's working, it should keep on working.
